How to get six pack abs

Washboard abs, or the "six pack", is the goal of many people. But no matter how hard some train they can't quite seem to get them. One thing you need to remember is that, no matter how good your abs are, you won't see them if your body fat is too high.

People always seem to think the abs must be trained differently to other muscle groups and so perform a mini marathon, i.e. they do hundreds of reps almost everyday. This certainly increases your abs' endurance but won't make them stronger or thicker. High rep training comes from combat sports and the army where the goal is to enable the individual to carry on past local fatigue to ensure victory, not to look good at the beach.

So, assuming your body fat is low and you aren't happy with your abs, here's where you may be going wrong. The abs are a relatively long muscle and taper down the body in width and thickness to the pubis bone. To make them more visible, you need to thicken them up. This is hypertrophy training, much like bodybuilding. To do this, you must train the abs with moderate weights for 5-12 reps for 4-8 sets, 2-3 times per week.
